100 Questions for Webmasters

I found this on mew151.net, and this is the exact kind of thing I can use to bulk up my writing section. Blank version here.

1. Please introduce yourself.
I'm Pika! I'm mostly a comic artist by trade and I like to put together premade model kits.
2. How long have you been making websites?
Long enough that I should be better at it!
3. And what got you into the hobby?
I've always wanted to learn HTML, but the thing that made it both accessible to learn and to provide an outlet was joining SmackJeeves to host my comic. They allowed you to edit the appearance of your comic site, a feature only now boasted by ComicFury since SmackJeeves's shutdown in 2019.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
In the end, I can't deny that I love websites that are fully decorated with personal touches and give me a reason to interact with those features. Some of my favorites are inevitably comic sites, but I also like to visit Neocities sites exclusively for the aesthetics. If someone presents a pre-2006 Windows aesthetic to their site, I'll click on it.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I'll have a structure in mind when I have an idea, but I'll usually leave the detail work to spontaneity. It makes things more exciting.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
TRsRockin was a big one I thought was really cool as a kid. Contemporarily, no one else is doing it like my friend, Moth. If I had even half the knowledge they do, I'd be doing a lot more. https://applelyeverafter.thecomicseries.com/comics/1
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Putting it out there for other people to look at. It's the top reason I still do my yearly April Fool's event on my comic site.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
What don't I struggle with? Fundamentals, as usual. That's my life story.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I like to mix it up often to keep myself entertained. Having had my comic site keep the same theme for a decade gives me cabin fever, but if it's not broke, don't fix it. (and what's really better than that theme?)
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Very, these days. Anything I can't do with CSS isn't worth knowing.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
I think I do now, because I had to look up what the tags were designed for. This list uses it, and it's not the correct usage of the format, right?!
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
Big fan of marquee.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Copy aaaaaaall the code I've already written from somewhere else.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Not really. It's a huge part of web development now, but the syntax is harder for me to parse. Even though it was written for babies. I struggle with math anymore, which is embarrassing, but I couldn't even get past the basics of Python even with a professor holding my hand.
15. How about PHP?
I only ever interface with static hosting, so I had no reason to learn it.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
This one? Hard to say.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
I wish I was the kind of person who was focused on content, but I don't, and have never, had anything worthwhile to say. I have mental constipation.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
I've thought about it! It could be fun. I'd jump for one for my comic before anything else.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I like them... I can't not like them. That age of the web is what made me want to interact with it.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
Technically no, because I always link images without alt text and its width and height defined. Because it just posts at its natural size already!!! But that isn't really the point of doing that... still, I hate taking unnecessary steps. The alt text is far more important, but that's exclusively out of laziness and a hatred for describing things.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them i love them
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I like seeing what people are into. It's like a little curated collection of interests.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I don't think it would be different in any significant way. Since I have very little to say, it's always going to be a site where I post pictures of mew I like.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Always, all the time. Is there anything I'm not envious of? I want to learn how they did it all and share the knowledge in my presentation.
25. What text editor do you use?
I used to use Notepad++, but now I mostly use Phoenix Code.
26. Why do you use that one?
Phoenix Code has a lot of very useful specifically web-focused features, even without a subscription. I can't in good faith recommend a subscription to them now that they've integrated the Claude LLM into their program.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
It's harder and harder now to not host your own images, but if you're doing webdev, it's good practice to do it anyway. Imgur is banned in half the world, and CatBox is down a quarter of the time. Neocities, NekoWeb, and ComicFury all allow you to host your own files.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
why pit two bad bitches against each other
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
According to my analytics, this site uses up 128 MB, which isn't even close to the original 2 GB cap they offer on the free hosting option, even with how image-heavy it is.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Definitely, I edit the documents on my computer.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
On Neocities, I prioritize clicking on busy sites.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Pink is my go-to color for obvious reasons. On my comic site, the accent colors are blue and green, which is the same for the writing sub-site here. I inherited that color palette for my comic site because it came with the theme, but I don't plan on seriously redoing it.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Quitting webdev?! When I'm just getting started??
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I try to get people to get into it all the time. I do have a few friends who are into webdev that I get to exchange notes with.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Sometimes, but no one's asking.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
With information, no. With new stamps, all the time.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
why fix what ain't broke
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Is this hobby-focused? Is that what this is?
39. Do you do web design professionally?
Can a rich man get to heaven?
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
It could be nice in theory, though web development has become a less valuable or enviable job. Probably not, if I'm being realistic. I wouldn't even want to be a comic artist professionally. Maybe I'll just cashier for the rest of my life. Work to fund your hobbies, is my outlook on life.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
haha not anymore.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I mean, define "social media". If we're bold enough to include Tumblr as "social", then yes.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I use Discord, and I have a lot of dear friends and communities there. That's the main way I keep in touch with people. It used to be IRC before this.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
I listen to music while I stare at a wall and don't even hear it. But when I do hear it, it's Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Mother Mother, and a lot of stuff up the 2000s alt. feedpipe.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
What could I even do with another website? Single picture of one of my cats?
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
This is a personal site, so I'll visit anything that strikes my fancy.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I think I have a hard time not saying what I actually think.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
From The Stars Shine Bright, yes. My partner and some of my dearest friends, I made through my comic.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
am i supposed to be unhappy.....
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
i think you should do anything you want forever, even if it doesn't follow best practices.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
i should go on a website, and it should scare me
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
Not really, I'll just write to find the endgoal I'm after. In a text format like this, the goal is just to fill in the blanks.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
I tried, but Firefox ate more memory than Chrome ever does. And everything else also uses Chromium, so it would be pointless to not keep using Chrome if I'm not switching to Firefox.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I won't convince you to use Chrome. It would be unethical.
55. And what OS are you on?
I'm currently running Windows 11 because god forbid an OS keeps being supported for more than 5 years at a time.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
Oh, that was like, an iceberg floating by for you wasn't it. Yeah, I do. It's not Windows 11 itself that I take issue with-- I mean, yeah, it is, but it's a lot to do with the longevity of support being so fleeting because everything has to speed by to the next big and better thing that you have to spend money on. I like some of the features they added in Windows 11, actually; mostly the File Explorer tabs. But that comes at the cost of disabling every piece of bloatware they installed on my system first.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
no. fuck your phones.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
If I go on a personal website, I expect people to do what they want. It's harder than ever to even get autoplay to work on modern browsers, so someone who takes the time to do it deserves to earn their prize. I've also tried to use these for April Fool's, but it's hard to convince a browser it should happen.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
They're neat, and I'm in a few! My favorite is the Apartment Webring. Ancient technology has ancient problems; the rings are usually broken because the sites are gone or linked improperly.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
Apparently, I make my shrines differently than most people. Lots of people use them to describe their history with the subject, but I just used it as another excuse to load up on images I liked. But I did it under the guise of social media, so it's at least a little more creative than that.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I'm not really breaking new ground, so maybe so. There are a lot of websites out there that use Windows 95/XP appearances, for instance.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
I don't know what I want, but I know it when I see it.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
A lot of assets I make are reassembled sprite sheets so I can make my own mew gifs. I hate drawing when I don't have to, and I'd rather use a different visual creative skill when I make web assets.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
Mewheart, Glitter-Graphics, BlogGIF
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Not using stylesheets. I just keep stacking styles in the head of the document I'm editing.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
please show me your website
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I've long gotten away from hardcoding it into the HTML. It's harder to edit later.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I've used frames for certain things, but it's hard to get around the problem of caching. I mean, we're all using static hosting, it's not like we have the option of PHP.
69. How about table-based layouts?
people who do this really want to have a hard time i think
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
There's a layout for every use case.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS is the part that makes it do what I want, so I have to force it to comply. After that, HTML is filling in <p>.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
It's been a really long time. Like, since I first started learning HTML and I was scared of CSS.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I really only pursue things when I have a reason to do them. Maybe someday I'll make layouts for people, but I would hate to make one and for it to be severely flawed.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Maybe in the middle. I can do more and understand more than most people, but it's still peanuts.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
All the time. I want to see what they have in there.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
I looked at how others were doing it and used basic W3Schools tutorials.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
I'll also do that when I don't know how else to achieve something. I once used an <em> tag as a container and then used CSS to remove its text styling instead of just making my own container. That one's still out there.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
They have to go where they're supposed to somehow.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
px is the go-to. % is the measurement for when I'm sizing against the viewport.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
The sadgrl layout has me fond of Nunito.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I don't really know what I'd do with it. That would probably be something like a collab comic or some kind of informational blog.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
It's my favorite thing to do. I'll open the Neocities activity page and scroll down to see what people are making.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
I hope they have because it would make me feel good. I bookmark websites I like all the time so I can go back and browse their links page.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
The amount of mews. And that's working.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I like to think about it, but I'm not actually anything more than an observer.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
It's not embarrassing to admit in 2026 when you spend 12+ hours on the computer.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
anyone who likes it....
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
I really don't know when I would use that.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
I can't say that I have. The game I have on here wasn't even made by me.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I've never tried! I've been writing by hand since I started, so I haven't really been introduced to many alternatives.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I might do it some day. I think the biggest reason I don't is because Neocities has one built in to the profile page.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I used to, but because of my chronic illness (being unable to hold thoughts or add to a conversation), I would rarely post on them. Dragon Cave Forums are the ones I look at most often.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Is this not the same question as which program I use to edit HTML?
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
I definitely think I do... there are people who think I'm cool and aloof, and also that I make good art. Sometimes these people are even strangers!
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
No, not unless it's extremely self-indulgent. And I'm talking in the sexual sense. I have my early work from being a young child finding out what my kink is, and no one else needs to see or know about that.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I want it to just exist online, even without me.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I have nothing to say about myself that isn't evident from my self-expression.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
My best friend online is my partner, who has her own comic website and a website for our cats.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
I don't want them to be absolutely enormous for people. I make sure they're displayed pretty small and with a modest file size.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
it's over already??
